Lagos Airport Tips: How to Fly In and Out of Murtala Muhammed Without Stress
Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja is Nigeria's busiest gateway. If you're flying out for the first time in a while, or arriving home after years abroad, a little planning saves money, time and stress.
1. Leave for the airport early. Very early.
Lagos traffic is the biggest risk to your flight. A trip from Lekki or Victoria Island to Ikeja can take two hours or more at busy times.
- Aim to arrive at least three hours before an international flight
- Add extra time on Fridays, rainy days and in December
- Night and early-morning flights usually mean lighter traffic
2. Know which terminal you need
International flights and domestic flights use different terminals, and they are not always next to each other. Check your ticket and the airline's information so you're dropped at the right place. If you're connecting from a domestic flight to an international one, give yourself several hours.
3. Getting to and from the airport safely
- Use a ride-hailing app such as Uber or Bolt, a trusted driver, or your hotel's transport
- On arrival, arrange your pickup before you land if you can
- Avoid accepting rides from strangers who approach you inside or outside the terminal
- Agree the price before the trip if you use a regular taxi
4. Avoid touts and "helpers"
You may meet people offering to "help" with check-in, luggage or forms. Some are genuine porters, many are not. Politely decline help you didn't ask for. Official airline and airport staff wear identification.
5. Money matters
- Carry some naira for small costs like porters, snacks or a SIM card
- Avoid changing large amounts with street changers around the airport
- Tell your bank you're travelling so your cards aren't blocked abroad
- Check the cash limits for leaving and entering Nigeria and declare amounts above the limit
6. Pack smart
- Weigh your bags at home. Overweight fees at check-in are expensive
- Keep passport, visa, ticket and important documents in your hand luggage
- Check what foods you can bring into your destination country. The UK, for example, restricts some meat and dairy products
7. Stay connected
