UK Visitor Visa Tips for Nigerians: Documents, Timing and Avoiding Refusal
Whether you're visiting family, attending a wedding, or coming for a short holiday, most Nigerians need a UK Standard Visitor visa before travelling. Refusals are common, and they usually come down to the same few mistakes. Here's how to give your application the best chance.
1. Apply only on the official website
UK visa applications are made online through the official GOV.UK website. After applying online, you book an appointment at a visa application centre in Nigeria to give your fingerprints and photo and submit documents.
2. Apply at the right time
You can apply up to three months before your travel date. Standard processing is usually around three weeks, but it can take longer at busy times such as before summer and December. Priority services are available at an extra cost if you're in a hurry.
Don't book non-refundable flights until your visa is approved.
3. Show you will come back
The visa officer's main question is simple: will this person return to Nigeria? Strong evidence of ties at home includes:
- A letter from your employer confirming your job, salary and approved leave
- Business registration (CAC documents) if you're self-employed
- Evidence of family, property or studies in Nigeria
- Previous travel history, especially past UK or US visas you used correctly
4. Get your bank statements right
Bank statements are where many applications fail. Officers look for a steady, believable pattern, not just a large balance.
- Provide statements covering at least the last six months
- Your salary or business income should appear regularly
- Avoid sudden large deposits just before applying. Officers often treat "funds parking" as a red flag
- If a large deposit is genuine (sale of a car, a contract payment), explain it and include proof
5. If someone in the UK is inviting you
A letter from your host helps. It should state their relationship to you, their address, how long you'll stay, and who is paying for the trip. Include a copy of their passport or UK residence permit. If they are paying, add their recent bank statements and payslips.
An invitation supports your application, but it does not replace evidence of your own ties to Nigeria.
6. Be consistent and honest
Every date, amount and detail on your form should match your documents. Never submit false documents. A deception finding can lead to a ban on future UK applications for years. If you've been refused before, declare it and explain what has changed.
7. Consider a longer visa
If you visit the UK regularly, you can apply for a long-term visitor visa valid for 2, 5 or 10 years. Each visit is still limited to up to six months. These cost more but can save repeated applications if you have a good travel record.
