Is a Jumia "old price" real?

A struck-through price makes almost any item look like a bargain. Here is how to check whether the saving is genuine.

Why the old price can mislead

Some sellers set a high "original" price and then sell at a price that is only slightly lower. The discount percentage looks impressive, but you may not be saving much compared with what the item usually costs.

Check the same item on other shops

Search for the exact model name, not just the brand. Compare the current price on Jumia with at least two other shops. If the discounted price is about the same as elsewhere, the saving may be smaller than it looks.

Look at the actual Naira saving

A 40% discount on a ₦5,000 item saves you ₦2,000. A 15% discount on a ₦300,000 item saves you ₦45,000. Work out the amount you will save in Naira, then decide whether that is worth it.

Check the variant and the seller

Watch for countdown timers and "limited stock" messages

Pressure tactics are common in sales. A countdown that resets, or a stock message that never changes, does not tell you the deal is real. Take a moment before you buy.

What to do if the price looks wrong

Take a screenshot of the product page and the price. If you think a listing is misleading, tell us through the contact page with the deal name and the link. We check reported deals and remove ones that don't meet our standards.
